Il Palagio: Sting's Tuscan Dream
This morning started like many others - an early delivery to Il Palagio, the stunning estate owned by Sting and Trudie Styler. I stopped at my usual spot for colazione: a perfect espresso and a warm cornetto, the kind of simple ritual that makes every Tuscan morning feel special.
The drive from Abbadia di Montepulciano to Figline Valdarno is one of my favorites. The route takes you through the heart of Tuscany, passing the medieval towers of San Gimignano in the distance and winding through the Chianti hills. Along the way, don't miss the Abbey of Passignano - a thousand-year-old monastery surrounded by vineyards - and the charming town of Greve in Chianti, perfect for a quick stop at the market square.

Wine Routes
The Secret Vineyard Route of Chianti
After five years of delivering to wineries across Chianti, I've discovered a route that takes you through some of the most spectacular and lesser-known vineyards in the region. This winding path through cypress-lined roads connects family-owned estates that have been producing wine for generations, far from the tourist crowds of the main highways.
The route begins just outside Greve in Chianti, taking a narrow road that climbs through ancient olive groves. Along the way, you'll pass stone farmhouses that date back to the Renaissance, their terracotta roofs glowing golden in the afternoon sun. The wineries here welcome visitors by appointment, offering intimate tastings where you'll meet the winemakers themselves.

Villages
Medieval Villages Time Forgot
Perched on hilltops throughout Tuscany are dozens of medieval villages that seem frozen in time. During my deliveries, I've had the chance to explore these remarkable places during quiet morning hours, before the day begins. These aren't the famous tourist destinations - they're the authentic villages where locals still gather in the piazza for their morning coffee.
One of my favorites is Montefioralle, a circular walled village near Greve. Walking through its stone archways feels like stepping back 800 years. The narrow streets are barely wide enough for two people to pass, and the views from the walls stretch across the Chianti countryside in every direction. Stop at the small osteria for lunch - they make pasta by hand every morning.

Landscapes
Sunrise Over Val d'Orcia
My early morning delivery routes through Val d'Orcia have given me access to some of the most breathtaking sunrises in Tuscany. This UNESCO World Heritage landscape, with its rolling hills, cypress trees, and golden fields, transforms into something magical in the first light of day.
There's a particular spot along the road between Pienza and San Quirico d'Orcia where I always stop for a few minutes. As the sun rises behind the hills, the morning mist settles in the valleys, and the famous cypress-lined roads emerge like dark ribbons across the landscape. It's the view you see on postcards, but experiencing it in person, with the cool morning air and the absolute silence, is something entirely different.

Hidden Trattorias Worth the Detour
Over the years, winery owners and local farmers have shared their favorite places to eat - the family-run trattorias where locals go for Sunday lunch, far from the tourist restaurants. These are the places where you'll find authentic Tuscan cooking, generous portions, and prices that seem stuck in the 1990s.
One gem is a tiny trattoria in the hills above Radda, run by three sisters who learned to cook from their grandmother. There's no menu - they simply tell you what they're making that day. The pici pasta with wild boar ragù is extraordinary, and their house wine comes from their cousin's vineyard down the road. Reservations are essential, but worth the planning.

Behind the Scenes
A Day in the Life: Delivering to Tuscan Wineries
People often ask what it's like to spend your days driving through one of the most beautiful regions in the world. The truth is, every day brings something new - a conversation with a winemaker, a recommendation for a hidden viewpoint, or simply the pleasure of navigating roads that wind through landscapes that have inspired artists for centuries.
My van is loaded before dawn at the distribution center near Florence. By 6 AM, I'm heading south into Chianti as the sun rises. The first deliveries are to small producers who need supplies for their morning operations. Between stops, the roads are mine - quiet, winding, and offering views that never get old, no matter how many times I drive them.

The Best Time to Visit Tuscany (According to a Local)
Everyone wants to visit Tuscany in summer, but having driven these roads in every season, I can tell you that the shoulder seasons offer something special. Late spring and early autumn bring perfect weather, fewer crowds, and a more authentic experience of Tuscan life.
May is particularly magical - the hills are green, wildflowers bloom along the roadsides, and the weather is warm but not hot. September and October bring the grape harvest, when the air is filled with the scent of fermenting wine and the vineyards buzz with activity. Even winter has its charm, with misty mornings and the chance to see Tuscany at its most peaceful.
